SALT LAKE CITY — Parts of the I-215 east belt route will be closed and TRAX trains will be rerouted beginning this weekend, due to different construction projects.

I-215 will be closed between the I-80 split and Foothill Drive from Friday at 9 p.m. to Monday at 5 a.m., the Utah Department of Transportation said in a news release.

Drivers are urged to use alternate routes to get to the I-215 east belt from I-80. A detour will take traffic off I-80 at 700 East, south to 3300 South, then east to I-215.

Crews are breaking up existing concrete and paving over it as part of a major maintenance project. Also, I-80 will be reduced to one lane in each direction on weeknights between 1300 East and the I-80/I-215 split as part of the project.

Rerouted TRAX trains

TRAX riders should be aware that several trains will be rerouted this weekend as work continues on the 700 South light rail tracks.

Beginning at 7 p.m. Friday through Sunday, the blue, green and red lines will not travel their standard routes, UDOT said. Plus, a temporary black line will be added.

• The blue line will run between Draper and the airport (and through downtown Salt Lake City, except Friday evening when a bus bridge will connect blue line passengers between the Ballpark and Gallivan Plaza and Library stations)
• The red line will run between Daybreak and Ballpark
• The green line will run between West Valley and Ballpark
• A temporary black line will run between the University of Utah and Salt Lake Central

UDOT suggests TRAX customers may want to explore options on buses or FrontRunner this weekend, as well.

Crews will be replacing rails in the 700 South area as part of maintenance.
