Family checks SUV after finding guns inside

Randall Jeppesen reportingWe've learned more about an Alpine family that found two handguns inside their SUV while cleaning it out.

Phil asked us not to use his last name, but he's the one that found two loaded handguns hidden under his car's cup holders.

"I never expected to find something like that," he said.

He found the guns while cleaning the car so his daughter could use it for prom. He says since then he's been trying to check out other potential hiding spots in the car. He even wants to have a drug-sniffing dog give the car a look over.

"I want to make sure we don't have any more surprises," he told us.

As for the prom, yes his daughter did use the car.

"I felt much better knowing she wasn't packing heat to the prom," Phil said.

It's still a mystery how the guns ended up in the car. The family is having a contest amongst themselves to come up with the best story.

Police say both guns turned up as stolen. They believe the weapons had been in the car since the family bought it back in 2006. It had previously been a rental car.
