Economic crunch means fewer salted roads in Mapleton

A bare-bones budget has one Utah city abandoning its bare road policy this winter.

Mapleton's mayor says the city will put down salt only on its busiest roads and intersections this year. It still will run snowplows on all the streets. But the cost of road salt is up this year, and the Daily Herald reports the city just doesn't have the money in its budget to salt every road like it usually does in the winter.

The mayor wrote a letter to residents asking them to drive more carefully after snowstorms. The city also hopes the winter won't be too harsh.
