Citing revenue problems, lawmakers propose reduced teacher raises

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- It looks like a second consecutive $2,500 raise for Utah teachers could be cut.

In light of underwhelming revenue numbers, lawmakers are looking for places to trim the fat from the state budget.

House Republicans voted in favor of a $1,700 raise instead. They also approved a 2.5 percent increase in per-pupil funding, down from 4 percent last year. And it looks unlikely that teachers will enjoy anything like the $1,000 bonus they received last year.

Senate Republicans haven't yet decided what course they will recommend. Once they approve a plan, it will go to a committee for a signature before being included in the budget.
