AG charges 51 with fraudulent voter registration

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The state attorney general's office has charged 51 people with improperly registering to vote in eastern Utah's Daggett County.

Fraudulent registration is a Class A misdemeanor.

A complaint filed with the state challenged the residency of 70 voters in November 2006. Attorney General Mark Shurtleff said people must register honestly about the voting district where they live.

Investigators checked voter registration forms, driver license records, tax returns and other records to verify whether the people who voted in Daggett County actually lived there.

The maximum penalty for fraudulent registration is a year in jail and a $2,500 fine.
