5 injured after man runs red light, drives through fences

SALT LAKE CITY — Five people were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries Thursday morning after a man ran a red light, got hit by a car and drove through multiple fences, police said.

Around 6:45 a.m., Salt Lake City police dispatch were notified of an accident at 1700 South and 300 West. One car was traveling westbound and ran a red light before getting hit by a vehicle driving southbound on 300 west, according to Detective Cody Lougy with the Salt Lake City Police Department.

The car that ran the red light drove through a yard and a couple of fences before going into reverse for an unknown reason and driving through another fence and hitting a fire hydrant, Lougy said.

Police called the fire department and the driver was extricated from the car. The driver and all of the passengers in the car were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Lougy said.

The female who was driving the car that hit them was OK and was not transported to the hospital, Lougy said.

Police initially did not believe drugs or alcohol were involved, but the accident is still under investigation.
