URI given $18.8 million biomedical research grant

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) — A biomedical research program at the University of Rhode Island has been awarded $18.8 million in federal funding to expand over the next five years.

URI announced the grant on Wednesday.

The Rhode Island IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence will use the money to focus on cancer, neuroscience and molecular toxicology research. The program was established to expand the statewide research capacity in biomedical sciences. It has been funded by the National Institutes of Health since 2001 with about $61 million in grants, including the recent award.

URI partners with Brown University, Rhode Island College, Providence College, Bryant University, Roger Williams University and Salve Regina University for the program. The Community College of Rhode Island is an affiliate of the network.
