Romania: court orders jailing of probed central banker

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — A court has ordered the formal arrest and jailing of the former deputy governor of Romania's central bank on suspicion of illicitly receiving 1 million euros ($1.1 million) when he was parliament speaker.

Bogdan Olteanu has been under house arrest since July 29 amid an investigation into allegations he asked for and received the money from a businessman in 2008 in return for persuading the government to appoint a certain governor for the Danube Delta. He denies wrongdoing.

A Bucharest court Friday ordered he be arrested for 16 days. Olteanu resigned as deputy bank governor after he was detained. He was speaker of the Chamber of Deputies from 2006 to 2008.

Journalist Liviu Mihaiu was governor of the delta from September 2008 to February 2009. He denies wrongdoing.
