RENO, Nev. (AP) — The union representing Reno-area transit bus system employees says members voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike despite progress in contract talks.
Teamsters Local 533 announced the move in a news release Sunday ahead of a deadline for expiration of the current two-year agreement.
Union President Gary Watson says the vote doesn't start a strike but allows union leaders to call a work stoppage any time starting Tuesday.
The contract for union employees with the Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County is set to expire at midnight Monday.
Watson says a contract extension is possible and an agreement could be reached with MV Transportation, the Texas-based contractor managing the system.
Local 533 has represented RTC bus system and RTC Access paratransit drivers and support personnel for 25 years.
