ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The former chief executive of an organization serving developmentally disabled people in New York City and on Long Island has been charged with state tax fraud involving money federal prosecutors say she embezzled from the nonprofit organization.
State authorities say 48-year-old Wafa Abboud of Merrick failed to pay taxes on more than $100,000 in kickbacks since 2011 from consultants and construction companies under contract to Human First.
The Attorney General's office says 49-year-old Marcelle Bailey of Garden City, chief executive of MPB Management Services, also faces tax fraud charges.
Both have been arraigned and released on bail on federal and state charges.
Abboud left Human First in May. The organization says it serves more than 1,400 families.
Calls to Abboud's and Bailey's attorneys were not immediately returned Monday.
