SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — A Springfield university has been awarded nearly $2 million to improve access to higher education for migrant workers and their families.
Drury University announced Tuesday that its College of Continuing Professional Studies was awarded the $1.94 million, five-year federal College Assistance Migrant Program grant from the U.S. Department of Education.
The Springfield News-Leader reports (http://j.mp/2bnsMtd ) the effort will be concentrated at Drury's campus in Monett. Studies have estimated that Missouri has about 35,000 and 65,000 seasonal farm workers.
The grant will pay for three full-time and three part-time staff members, who will work to identify, recruit and support migrant students. The grant will also fund classroom technology, such as laptops, as well as living expenses like child care reimbursement.
The goal's to serve at least 20 students the first year.
