McALLEN, Texas (AP) — Federal prosecutors say two former South Texas school board members have been sentenced to prison for extorting a company by threatening to end a contract with the school district if they weren't paid a bribe.
Fifty-four-year-old Eloy Infante was sentenced Tuesday to nearly four years in prison and 45-year-old Elpidio Yanez Jr. was sentenced to more than three years.
Federal authorities said in a release the men were serving on the board in Donna last year when they each demanded $10,000 from the company to retain its contract with the school district.
A third man, 50-year-old Adrian Guerrero, was sentenced to more than a year in prison for acting as a middleman between the parties.
The three pleaded guilty in January 2016 to attempted interference with commerce by extortion.
