SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Police say an 18-year-old driver is dead after his vehicle apparently slid on ice into oncoming traffic and was struck by a pickup.

Police Chief Max Jackson says Friday night's crash occurred on U.S. Highway 89 near in Harrisville.

Investigators believe the man was driving his small Nissan at a high rate of speed when he attempted to pass cars by driving into the center median and then he hit ice.

Jackson says the driver of the pickup was treated at a hospital for minor injures. The victim's name was not released.

The officer says that the collision was so severe that debris from both cars covered a quarter of a mile of highway.
