NEVADA -- Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, (D-Nev.) is allegedly criticizing the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for backing a California ballot measure banning same sex marriage.

The anti-Mormon backlash after California voters overturned gay marriage last fall is similar to the intimidation of Southern blacks during the civil rights movement, a high-ranking leader of the LDS Church says in a speech to be delivered Tuesday.Gay rights activist who met with Reid last week told the Salt Lake Tribune he stated the church should have stayed out of the fight over Proposition 8.
A spokesperson for Reid would not talk about what he said during the closed door meeting.
Reid is the highest ranking elected official who is also a member of the LDS church.
