SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A policy targeting school bullying and hazing has moved a step closer to reality in Utah.
The State Board of Education unanimously approved a second reading of the proposal Friday. The final vote is scheduled next month.
Board members say the policy is being prompted by an increase in bullying and hazing incidents across Utah.
The proposed policy specifically addresses any brutality of a physical nature such as whipping, beating, branding and electric shocking.
It also targets the forced consumption of any food, liquor or drug; the use of the Internet or cell phones to harass or intimidate; and social aggression such as spreading rumors and name calling.
There also will be new reporting and intervention procedures.
