(KSL News) Some Utahns had a hard time celebrating the new year, because fire damaged or destroyed their homes.

In American Fork, fire crews arrived on the scene quickly and were able to contain this fire to the kitchen.

Inside the house were a lot of animals, including dogs and snakes. None of the animals nor residents were hurt.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

Families, Pets Escape House Fires

Earlier last evening, a house in West Valley City went up in flames. Eight people inside this home and all are okay.

Kris Romigan/ West Valley Fire Dept.: "There was a two-year-old boy upstairs asleep. They first became aware of the fire when they smelled smoke. An adult ran upstairs and got the two-year old, and they were all out safely."

When firefighters arrived, flames were coming from the roof. They put the fire out in about 10 minutes.

The cause of this fire, too, is under investigation.
