WASHINGTON (AP) -- Federal grants will help irrigation companies in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming curb salt water discharges.
Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced the $11 million in grants for three irrigation companies in Utah, another in Cortez, Colo., and a fifth in Eden/Farson, Wyo.
The goal is to cut down on the 9 million tons of salt that gets dumped into the Colorado River basin every year.
Half of that comes from natural sources. The rest comes from irrigation practices and from municipal and industrial sources.
The Utah grants were awarded to irrigation companies in Daggett, Duchesne and Emery counties.
The money will help pay for pipelines to deliver water more efficiently and cut down on evaporation.
