(KSL News) Utah's new sales tax on food will take effect on Monday.

But shoppers be warned: not all food will be taxed the same.

When lawmakers decided to lower the food tax they decided to only have it affect unprepared food.

For example, a soft drink in a bottle will only be taxed at 2.75 percent. However, a soft drink from a fountain machine will have the old 4.75 percent tax because it comes with "utensils" --the cup, lid and straw. The same goes for any deli item served with a fork.
