CEDAR CITY -- A father and his infant daughter were killed in a crash involving three cars on Interstate 15 early Sunday morning. Five other people were hurt.

Troopers say the crash happened just after 4 a.m. in New Harmony, about 15 miles south of Cedar City.

A family of five from California was driving in the southbound lane when the driver swerved to miss a deer. He overcorrected, and the Range Rover rolled several times before it came to rest in the middle of the freeway.

Two people in that car, 31-year-old Olegario Angulo and his 4-month-old daughter Assata, were killed instantly. Troopers say the father was wearing his seatbelt, but the infant was not in a carseat and was ejected from the vehicle.

Moments later, the driver of a Toyota 4-Runner noticed debris in the road and began to slow down. He didn't see the Range Rover in time, and slammed into it. The driver pulled into the emergency lane and got out of his car to warn other vehicles about the crash.

A short time after that, the driver of a pickup slammed into the Range Rover. The pickup ended up in the emergency lane facing the wrong direction.

The driver of the Range Rover was transported to Valley View Medical Center in Cedar City with serious injuries. The other two passengers were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Two people in the pickup were also taken to VVMC, and later flown to Intermountain Medical Center. Both were wearing seatbelts.

The crash shut down the southbound lanes of the freeway for seven hours.
