LOGAN, Utah (AP) -- Cache County's Council has voted to drop a $2 air pollution control fee added to vehicle registrations in 2006.
Council members say the decision is part of an effort to limit taxes. It's not clear when the new policy goes into effect.
As of March, the fee had generated $388,340 for the county. Of that, $287,919 went to the Bear River Health Department for air quality research and pollution education programs.
Councilman Cory Yeates says he pushed to drop the fee after complaints from taxpayers who say the county's bad air has not improved.
According to the EPA, in some areas, Utah's air quality violates federal air pollution standards. Those areas, including Cache County, have been labeled "non-attainment" areas and must be cleaned up by 2014.
