Alex Cabrero Reporting Last night's storm was too much for a tree in one South Salt Lake neighborhood. It fell across two homes, missing the people living there by just a few feet. It happened at 28th south and 12th east.
The tree has been growing for years, but in just a few seconds it came crashing down. The good news is nobody was hurt; the bad news is there may be a controversy as to who's liable for this tree.
When it fell, it crushed the back deck of one house, then smashed into the next house over. That started a small fire, but it was put out before it did any major damage.
Neither of the two residents wanted to talk to us on camera, but they say the tree woke them both up when it hit. The tree has been dead for quite some time and they say they've been trying to get someone to cut it down for years, but because it stood on the border of the city, the canal company, and some condominiums, they could never get someone to claim it.
Thing is, this tree is one of three in the same condition.
Becky Larsen, Neighbor: "There's two more trees that have to be taken out, but nobody knows who's responsible for them, and nobody is taking any action in saving these things. But obviously, now we know there's a problem and it has to be taken care of."
Again, the good news is no one was hurt; and even though the tree fell on a phone line, it still works.
Now the insurance companies will get involved to see who's liable.
