WEST JORDAN -- Students at West Hills Middle School found a gun Wednesday on a school playing field.

The students noticed the gun and called a teacher over. The teacher then took the gun to the office.

The school resource officer was at the school at the time and is investigating where the gun came from and how it ended up on the school's playing field.

In a letter, West Hills principal Kim Baker commended the students for handling "themselves wonderfully and follow[ing] procedures as taught."

She also wrote, "Staff followed proper protocol to maintain safety and security."

West Hills Middle School is located at 8270 S. Grizzly Way in West Jordan.
