LAYTON, Utah (AP) -- The Utah State Office of Education says that more than 10,000 of the state's 551,000 students are homeless.
That works out to be about one student per classroom across the state.
Advocates say homeless children are more likely to experience hunger, suffer chronic health problems, repeat a grade in school or drop out of school altogether.
Mary Ann Nielson, homeless liaison with Davis School District, says schools deal with many different categories of homeless students.
However, she says when a school district identifies a child as homeless, it can provide services like transportation, meals and school supplies.
