LAYTON — A 22-year-old man was hospitalized after being shot by a Layton police officer early Wednesday after police said he charged at an officer with a knife.

At approximately 12:49 a.m. Wednesday, Layton police officers were called to a "domestic disturbance" at the Overlook at Sunset Point Apartments, according to Layton Police Department Patrol Lt. Kyle Schroder.

He said a woman warned police that her ex-boyfriend had armed himself with a knife. She told police she was concerned that he intended to stab responding police officers.

Schroder said the man approached an officer with a knife. After retreating from the man and commanding him to drop the knife, police said the officer shot the man. No officers were hurt in the altercation, and no other victims were identified, according to police.

Additional Layton police officers and Layton Fire Department personnel arrived on the scene and provided emergency medical treatment. Schroder said the person was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition. A multi-agency team is investigating and the officer involved has been placed on leave.
