SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints invited its members to participate in "unified fast" of gratitude this holiday weekend.

The First Presidency posted on social media Thursday afternoon saying the fast will be part of the U.S.'s 250th anniversary observance. The fast will be held on Sunday, July 5, for all members in the U.S.

"All are invited to participate in a unified fast to express gratitude for religious liberty and to pray that it be strengthened throughout the world," the church statement said.

Church leaders have frequently spoken of the importance of freedom of religion, pointing to the United States Constitution and the First Amendment. The church website says religious freedom is a basic principle of the church and a "fundamental human right."

"Religious freedom ensures that people can exercise their agency in matters of faith. Religious freedom safeguards the right of all people to hold their own religious beliefs and express them openly without fear of persecution or being denied equal rights of citizenship. Latter-day Saints believe in defending the religious freedom of others just as readily as their own," the church website says.
