KEARNS — Police have identified a person of interest they believe to be connected to a shooting in the Kearns area earlier this year that caused three schools to go into a secure protocol.

On the afternoon March 19, officers with the Unified Police Department responded to the area of 4100 West and 4850 South after someone reported shots that were fired.

Police said a man was approached by two people, who allegedly fired multiple rounds at him and ran away before officers arrived.

The victim was taken to a hospital with critical injuries.

The incident prompted the Granite School District to place West Kearns Elementary, David Gourley Elementary and Kearns Junior High into a secure protocol.

In a press release Tuesday afternoon, the department said at least one of the people believed to have been involved was taken into custody after "extensive investigative efforts" by police.

Police said they were not identifying the suspect at this time as the shooting remains under investigation.

"The Unified Police Department remains committed to the safety of the Kearns community and will provide updates as they become available," the press release said.
