GARDEN CITY, Rich County — Michael Leonhardt, the mayor of Garden City, died earlier this week after a battle with cancer.

According to his obituary, Leonhardt died Tuesday at the age of 58, after a "short but courageous battle with cancer."

Leonhardt was currently serving his third term as Garden City's mayor. He previously served on the City Council, as fire chief and as a volunteer with Bear Lake County Search and Rescue.

Rep. Blake Moore shared condolences regarding the loss for the northern Utah community.

"Mike truly embodied what it means to care for your community. Garden City is better because of his dedication to public service and lifelong commitment to loving his neighbors. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him," Moore said in a social media post Thursday evening.

The Garden City Fire Department took to social media, saying it is heartbroken over Leonhardt's passing.

"Mike was the last volunteer Chief for GCFD and put his heart into it. Mike served for over 10 years and his loss will be mourned by the firefighters and their families. We wish all the love and healing to his sweet wife Tami and all of his children and grandchildren. He will not be forgotten," a statement on the department's Facebook page reads.

Leonhardt leaves behind his wife Tami, their seven children, and a host of grandchildren, according to his obituary.

"He will be remembered for his devotion to his wife and family, his unwavering commitment to his community, and his genuine, caring spirit," family members wrote in the obituary.

Memorial services are set for next week — with viewings on Thursday evening and Friday morning, followed directly by the funeral service beginning at 12 p.m.
