WEST JORDAN — Police have released the identity of a 26-year-old man who was shot and killed Tuesday night, hours after barricading himself inside a house.

Elhelbawy Adam Idrees was shot by multiple law enforcement officers when they entered the house after obtaining a warrant to do so. Details surrounding the shooting were not made available on Wednesday afternoon.

Police were called to a house, 1889 W. 7265 South, about 4:15 p.m. Tuesday after receiving reports of an argument between several people, one of whom had a gun, according to West Jordan Deputy Police Chief Jeremy Robertson. A SWAT team was called to the scene.

Five people were initially in the house when officers arrived. Four were able to get out safely during the ensuing standoff as police attempted to negotiate with Elhelbawy, who remained inside. West Jordan police said Wednesday the investigation into the relationships between all five people was ongoing.

About 9:30 p.m., SWAT team members entered the house after obtaining a search warrant. Contact was made with Elhelbawy, and shots were fired, West Jordan police said.

Elhelbawy was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other information about what prompted the police to shoot has been released.

Eight officers from the West Jordan Police Department and one Utah Highway Patrol trooper — all members of the joint SWAT team — fired their weapons as the warrant was being served and have been placed on paid administrative leave, police confirmed Wednesday.

The Unified Police Department is investigating the police shooting.
