ST. GEORGE — In one of Utah's longest-running rivalries, Cedar and Dixie went head to head for the 97th time Friday night, but this time it was the Reds who walked away with the win.
Cedar struck first midway through the opening quarter. On fourth down, kicker Cody Stevenson drilled a 30-yard field goal to put the Reds up 3-0 .
Dixie answered in the second quarter when quarterback Deacon Virgin found Tano Anzalone for a touchdown right before halftime. The extra point was good, giving the Flyers a 7-3 lead. Cedar tried to respond but couldn't find the end zone before the clock ran out before the halftime break.
The Flyers extended their advantage in the third quarter as Jayson Malufau powered in a touchdown, stretching the lead to 13-3.
Cedar came alive in the fourth quarter, though. Dylan Crowley caught a touchdown to cut into the lead, but the Reds missed the extra point. A few minutes later, Braden Crain scored to put Cedar on top, and this time the kick was good, controlling a 16-13 lead with less than a minute left in the game.
Dixie had one last chance, but Cedar's Dax Wankier came up with an interception with 19 seconds left, sealing the win for the Red. Cedar took a knee and celebrated a rivalry victory on the road.
The Reds improve to 3-0 with the 16-13 win, while the Flyers fall to 1-2.
