WEST VALLEY CITY — Police arrested a man who they say shot another man in the stomach last week.
Jason Handy, 38, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail Tuesday for investigation of illegal discharge of a firearm causing injury, being a restricted person in possession of a gun, and violating a protective order.
Just after 11 p.m. on Aug. 1, West Valley police were called to the area of 2000 West and 3600 South.
"Officers arrived at the scene and located the victim, who had been shot in the abdomen. Officers on scene conducted lifesaving efforts, and the victim was transported by the West Valley Fire Department in critical condition," according to a police booking affidavit.
One witness told police that the 41-year-old victim had arrived at the home unannounced, looking for his ex, who lives at the home.
"The witness stated (Handy) came outside and began arguing with the victim. (He) stated, 'You're not going to get shot over this,'" according to the affidavit.
The victim responded by threatening to kill Handy and then ran at him, the affidavit states. Handy allegedly shot the man and then ran from the scene.
Because Handy currently has a protective order against him in another case; he is restricted from using or possessing a gun, according to police. Police say it will be up to the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office to determine if the shooting qualifies as self-defense.
