FARMINGTON — A Bountiful man was sentenced to jail Monday for placing a camera in the women's locker room at the Davis County Mosquito Abatement District building and recording fellow employees.
Gavin Allen Malo, 24, was charged in 2nd District Court in August 2024 with 14 counts of voyeurism, a third-degree felony. He pleaded guilty in May to two of the counts as part of a plea agreement.
The two counts of voyeurism will "represent all 14 victims," and a continuous protective order will be in place for each victim, the plea agreement states. Malo was sentenced to 120 days in jail plus four years of probation.
Malo, a former field tech at the Davis County Mosquito Abatement District, was placed on administrative leave in June 2024 after he was linked to a camera found in the women's locker room at the Kaysville office. The camera had recordings of employees "in various stages of dress," charges said.
Malo was arrested and subsequently fired, according to district manager Gary Hatch.
On June 25, 2024, an employee at the building reported to police "she noticed a wire with electrical tape protruding from the side of a vent cover in the ceiling," charging documents say. The employee, investigating the source of the wire, found a camera connected to a battery pack concealed within the vent.
The camera's memory card showed almost 200 video files and over 150 images, capturing 14 different people in the locker room, according to the charges.
Malo was ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation and cognitive behavioral therapy, his sentencing documents state. Once he successfully completes probation, the felonies will be reduced to class A misdemeanors, as outlined in the plea agreement.
A hearing to determine restitution for the victims is scheduled for Oct. 20.
