GUNNISON — A 10-year-old boy is dead after he was hit by a car while riding his bike on Wednesday.
The incident happened about 4:20 p.m. Gunnison Valley Police Chief Jason Adamson said a westbound vehicle was stopped at a stop sign at 100 South, about to cross Main Street. At the same time, three boys were riding their bikes south on the sidewalk along Main Street.
"When they came to 100 South, two of the boys were a little bit ahead of the third boy, and they crossed safely," Adamson said. "At this point, the driver crossed Main Street and did not see the third boy coming off of the sidewalk onto the street there to cross the street, and that's when she struck him on his bike."
The 10-year-old boy, identified through GoFundMe* as Xander Vincent, sustained significant injuries and was taken to Gunnison Valley Hospital, where LifeFlight was called.
"They were unable to maintain a pulse with him, and he was subsequently pronounced deceased at the hospital," Adamson said.
The driver of the vehicle was a 28-year-old female. Adamson said she is cooperating with authorities and remained at the scene to provide a statement.
The chief added that distracted driving doesn't appear to be a factor, but investigations were ongoing Thursday.
