ST. GEORGE — For 30 years, the Community Education Channel has served Southern Utah through broadcasting public, municipal and county meetings, local news and high school and collegiate sports — but no more.
On Monday, the channel's 30-year journey came to an end.
The channel was created in 1995 through an interlocal partnership among the cities of St. George, Hurricane, Santa Clara, Washington City and Ivins, as well as Washington County and Utah Tech University, when creating professional video content for television was costly.
The CEC YouTube channel is being taken over by Utah Tech and rebranded accordingly, Stephen Lee, dean of Utah Tech University's College of Humanities and Social Sciences and a CEC board member, previously told St. George News. Some programming may still be played on the TDS channels, he said.
The Community Education Channel has been semi-independent and not tied to media courses offered through Utah Tech. As such, the channel's shutdown will not affect any of the school's academic or media-related programs, Lee said.
Earlier this year, the Community Education Channel Board announced that the channel would cease operations at the end of June due to diminishing funds.
