- Jane Hedengren, a standout distance runner, wins her second Gatorade national award.
- Hedengren holds multiple national records, including a 3,000-meter run in 8:40.03.
- She will join BYU, following in her father's footsteps as a former athlete.
PROVO — Jane Hedengren thought she was sitting down with Diljeet Taylor, her soon-to-be cross country and track and field coach at BYU, in downtown Provo to discuss training and strategy during the summer before her freshman season.
Instead, the record-setting 5-foot-10 distance runner from Timpview High was surprised by three-time Gatorade national cross country athlete of the year Katelyn Tuohy, who runs professionally for Adidas.
Hedengren was joining the club, one that includes more than 71 gold medals and 34 national championships.
The BYU signee was named the 2024-25 Gatorade national track and field athlete of the year Tuesday, adding to her collection that includes a Gatorade national cross country award from the fall season.
"It's a big honor," said Hedengren, who joined Tuohy as the only high school-age young women to win Nike Cross Nationals and Gatorade national honors in both track and field and cross country.
"I think there's a lot of incredible women that are working in the country and have had some great performances this year, and so it was really exciting to receive this award and receive it from such a established track athlete herself (in Tuohy) and phenomenal person. So overall, just really excited and grateful."
If ever there was an athlete on whom Gatorade should "double down," it's Hedengren.

The Utah state record holder in cross country and most distance events in track and field has gone national, most recently winning the 3,000-meter run at the Nike Outdoor Nationals in a high school age-record time of 8 minutes, 40.03 seconds — a mark that obliterated her own previous record by more than 18 seconds.
The time is less than 12 seconds off the world record set by Great Britain's Zola Budd in 1985.
Hedengren also broke the national record in the mile in 4:23.50 at the HOKA Festival of Miles and 9:17.75 in the two mile at the Brooks PR Invitational that also set a North American record. She also owns national records in the 1,600 meters in 4:21.81, 3,200 meters in 9:14.65, and the two mile in 9:17.75.
"Jane Hedengren delivered the multi-generational type of season we've never seen before and might never see again," PrepCalTrack editor Rich Gonzalez told Gatorade. "Pure domination in the distance events and a ridiculous re-writing of the record books at multiple distances.
"The only thing more amazing than her repeated displays of mind-boggling stamina was her sheer grace in doing so, never flashing any sign of physical duress during her parade of record assaults. Her senior year resume was truly remarkable."
The Timpview grad who maintained a 3.79 weighted GPA and committed to run collegiately at BYU, where her father, John, was a former All-American cross country and track and field athlete and now teaches in the chemical and biological engineering department (and has tracked her distance running career to date on his YouTube channel).
