CEDAR CITY — A Cedar City public works employee has been arrested and accused of pulling a gun on a co-worker while on the job.

The 62-year-old Enoch man was booked into the Iron County Jail on Wednesday and charged Thursday in 5th District Court with aggravated assault, a third-degree felony.

On Wednesday, Iron County sheriff's deputies received an anonymous tip "that two Cedar City public works employees had gotten in an argument over an incident" while the two were working on a pavement project, and that "during the course of the disagreement, one male individual brandished a handgun to the other," according to a police booking affidavit.

A deputy contacted the supervisor for the two men who said the employees were working on Shurtz Canyon Drive when one man cut the other man off.

"The superintendent reported that as (the victim) walked by (the other man's) work truck, (the man) opened the door with a gun in his hand," the affidavit states.

That victim further told deputies that (the man) had been honking his horn at him and was yelling, "so he approached his truck to see what was wrong. (The victim) stated that when he approached the truck, (the man) opened the truck door with a handgun in his hand, pointed at him," the affidavit says.

The supervisor said the incident "was handled internally and (the man) was put on a two-day suspension."

Deputies then went to that man's residence in Enoch to question him. He allegedly said he was in his city vehicle when he was cut off by the other employee.

"He then began to lay on his horn and yell at (the victim). (He) stated he then retrieved his loaded handgun out of his backpack and pointed it at the truck (the victim) was inside of," the affidavit states. "(He) stated he then placed the handgun on the floor of his truck and walked around a bit to cool off. (He) stated he then went back into his truck and saw (the victim) standing outside of the truck trying to speak with him. (He) stated he was picking the gun off of the floor board of the truck while opening the door to speak with (him). (He) stated he had the gun in his hand, opened the door, and (the victim) yelled at him for pointing a gun at him. (He) stated he was just going to put the gun back in his bag and was not pointing it at him."

When told that other witnesses reported the he had pointed his gun at the victim, the man said "he could not remember," according to the arrest report.
