SALT LAKE CITY — Two people were arrested Monday following a road-rage confrontation, during which a man intentionally hit a vehicle a woman was hiding behind, according to police.
Johan Esteban Orozco Henao, 24, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of aggravated assault with a road-rage penalty enhancement. He was also arrested on suspicion of reckless driving, failing to stop for police, causing a crash and not having vehicle insurance.
His girlfriend, Laura Hernandez Hernandez, 22, was arrested for investigation of tampering with evidence and damaging or interrupting a phone.
About 7 a.m. Monday, Henao "intentionally drove his vehicle toward a female victim following a verbal confrontation" near 100 South and 600 West, according to a police booking affidavit.
A 24-year-old woman had turned into her apartment complex when she was cut off by a vehicle with a Washington license plate. The woman continued to her parking spot when Hernandez began yelling at her, said Salt Lake police spokesman Brent Weisberg.
While the victim was standing at the back of her vehicle, Henao accelerated toward her, striking the rear of her vehicle hard enough to push it into a parked vehicle beside her vehicle, nearly hitting her, he said.
The victim was on the phone with police when Hernandez "approached the victim and, in a threatening manner, told the victim to 'hang up the phone,'" her police booking affidavit states. Hernandez would later tell police, after being arrested, that she wanted to ask the victim if they could "handle the problem together."
Henao and Hernandez then sped away from the apartment complex.
About 9 a.m., Salt Lake police officer Joseph Sanchez, Jr. was on the phone with his sergeant getting information about the wanted vehicle when it drove right by him.
"Caught off guard for a second, officer Sanchez acted quickly. He got the car stopped near 200 South (and) 600 West and, with help from other officers, arrested two people," Salt Lake police said.
