6A track and field: American Fork credits unified culture for title sweep

PROVO — American Fork's boys and girls track and field teams practice and perform like one giant squad of athletes at the Utah County school that has become a power in the sport.

So when the Cavemen joined together for a big, combined "victory lap" after the 6A state meet at BYU's Robison complex, it wasn't surprised.

For some, though, the hardware they brought in tow might have been. Both of them.

Cael Flinders and Kaden Fairbanks took two of the top-three spots in the 400 meters, and the Cavemen used their depth to rise to the top of 6A boys track and field, upending Corner Canyon's four-year run as the top team in the state's highest classification.

Perhaps less surprising was the American Fork girls team, which won a second straight 6A title under head coach Brett Myrup, who the Cavemen drenched with an ice bath after their celebratory victory lap.

"We train them as one team," Myrup said. "We're all working together — boys, girls — doing the same thing. Since I took over, that's been a big emphasis. We all wear the same uniform, we are all the same team, helping each other out, boys or girls. It's been awesome."

A veritable cross country powerhouse, the Cavemen boys program added a number of field events and mid-distance strengths like Flinders and Fairbanks to overtake the Chargers' bid for a fifth consecutive crown.

Like their boys' team counterparts, the Cavemen girls team used their depth to overcome region rival Lone Peak for their third championship in program history. Cambria Hasler finished runner-up twice to Mountain Ridge star Kinzlee Riddle, who won individuals titles in the 100, 200 and 400.

"Our sprinters just caught up these last couple of years," Myrup said. "It all came together. … We got points everywhere. We got a lot of fifth through eighth-place points to add to it; Lone Peak was that tough."

Corner Canyon's boys were led by David Konan, who won individual titles in the 100, 200 and as part of the 4x100-meter relay to pace 117.5 points. Herriman finished third with 89.50, including a large section from Tayshaun Ogomo's record-setting 800-meter run and a 4x800-meter title run, as well.

Ogomo didn't aim to break a state record that has stood since 2016 when he reeled in Corner Canyon's McKay Wells down the stretch en route to a 1 minute, 49.40-second finish with a blistering kick in the final 200 meters.

Ogomo used a similar strategy last month at the Mount SAC relays, where he hung off the shoulder of the leader for a bit more than the first lap before powering through the final turn and sprinting the final 100 meters to best former Davis standout Logan MacKay's 800-meter record of 1:49.77.

"Coming into this, that was my plan: sit right behind him, see who wants it more with 400 to go and battle down the line," said Ogomoa, a Utah State signee who credited runner-up Wells for responding the way he did on the back stretch and pushing him .17 seconds past the record.

"I don't think I could have ran that without McKay being there; 1:49 is really hard. But the fact he responded to a move every time I made them, and I responded to a move when he made one, I think that's the reason why the state record went down today."
