WEST JORDAN — Sadler Barnes wasn't just battling the elements as he finished off his second round at the 1A boys' golf state tournament at Mountain View Golf Course.

The Milford senior and his teammates were fighting for a championship for the first time in over a decade, with a coach who was there the last time the Tigers were on top but whose hearing has begun to go out in recent days.

Barnes finished at 17-over-par for third place individually as the Tigers won their first team title since 2010 by eight strokes. Wayne finished second, followed by Monticello, Panguitch and Valley.

Panguitch junior Camden Englestead shot the second-best round of the second round at 5-over, winning medalist honors by a single stroke over Monticello's Traken Lee.

Wayne's Miles Hinkle and Canyon Daley finished just behind Barnes at fourth and fifth, respectively. But Milford ran 14 golfers deep for most of the season, including a talented round of freshman that helped propel all five of the Tigers' scoring golfers inside the top 20 just two years after not making the state meet.

"We had six freshmen that carried our team all year," Barnes said. "This was motivation."

Barnes was a toddler the last time Milford won a state golf title, when Bud Barnes helped the Tigers cap back-to-back championships in 2010. So the "motivation" of which the senior speaks was for the program's long-time coach who has seen the highs of the program.

"It means a lot to me, for Bud," Barnes said. "We love Bud so much; he just lost his hearing, and I don't think he's going to coach for very much longer. I think we all did it for Bud today; that was the main thing."

1A girls golf: Alli Young medalist as Monticello wins 2nd title in 3 years

The hardest part about Alli Young's run to the 1A girls golf individual title was having to go through her teammate, Allise Lewis, who finished 4 shots back in third.

But the Buckaroos leader didn't stay down for long.

Young survived torrential rains late in her round and a spirited charge from Lewis and Valley's Kaylee Brinkerhoff for medalist honors to help Monticello clinch their second championship in three years Wednesday at Mountain View Golf Course.

"I am so glad my team took state," said Young, one of four seniors with Lewis who have been playing together for four straight years. "We've been working really hard this season, and I think that we deserve that from all season long. We've been fighting and practicing, trying to get here.

"I'm glad that we took it as a team, and not just me individually," she added.

Buckaroos teammate LE Olson finished fifth, Cambree Chamberlain was tied for sixth, and Lilli Burton was the fifth scorer in a tie for 17th.

Brinkerhoff finished second, one shot back of Young and Wayne's Bree Torgerson was one shot back of Lewis for fourth.
