DUCHESNE — A woman was shot and killed by sheriff's deputies after they say she pointed a gun at a deputy on Saturday.

Duchesne County sheriff's deputies responded to a domestic violence incident in west Duchesne County about 9:30 p.m. Saturday, the sheriff's office said. While deputies were trying to contact the woman, "she opened the door holding a handgun," the sheriff's office said in a statement.

Deputies ordered the woman to drop the weapon, but the sheriff's office said she raised the gun and pointed it at one of them.

"The deputy fired at her, striking her in the chest," the statement said.

Medical aid was administered, but the woman died at the scene. Her identity has not yet been released. She is only described in the statement as an "adult female."

The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting death.
