PROVO โ€” The first two minutes of overtime were the most important for Arizona State women's basketball Saturday afternoon.

Jalyn Brown scored 23 points and nine rebounds โ€” including 6 of the Sun Devils' 14 points in overtime as Arizona State used a game-ending 14-2 run to push past BYU 85-73 in front of 3,037 fans at the Marriott Center..

Tyi Skinner added 22 points and six assists for the Sun Devils (9-19, 3-13 Big 12), who shot 4-of-5 from the field in the extra period including a pair of 3-pointers from Brown and Makayla Moore to help seal BYU's back-to-back losses since last week's upset over then-No. 20 Oklahoma State.

"We just emphasized that we had to make sure the first two minutes of overtime were really important," Skinner said. "We've been in overtime before, and the team got out on us.

"We knew we had to get out and make a good run."

Delaney Gibb led BYU with 25 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists and three steals โ€” but also had five of the Cougars' 20 turnovers that led to 20 points for the Sun Devils.

Amari Whiting supplied 13 points, five rebounds, two steals and seven turnovers for BYU (13-14, 4-12 Big 12), and Emma Calvert added 12 points and three rebounds.

"We let their two best players go off, and turnovers continue to be a problem," BYU coach Amber Whiting said. "I'm going to sound like a broken record every day in practice, but we're going to keep running with them."

BYU has averaged 18.8 turnovers per game since Big 12 play began, but just 14.8 giveaways for 12.8 points in wins compared to 19.2 turnovers for 19.2 points in losses.

Perhaps more concerning is that Arizona State had just seven steals, meaning 13 of the Cougars' turnovers were unforced.

"We didn't play very well connected tonight," Whiting said. "When you're not playing connected, you're going to get careless. We've got to clean it up, no ifs, ands or buts about it."

Gibb forced a turnover and found Lauren Davenport to push the Cougars ahead, 69-64 with an 11-2 run with 2:21 left in regulation.

But Moore drained her third 3-pointer with 45 seconds left to pull Arizona State within 71-69 in the final minute, and Skinner forced overtime with a pair of free throws after Gibb fouled her under the basket with 12 seconds left.

Moore drained a corner three as the Sun Devils opened the extra frame on a 9-0 run to go up 80-71 with 2:27 remaining, and Brown added 30 seconds later to stretch the lead to 83-72.

"This is a tough place to play; the last time we played them, they shot the ball really well and we knew we had to defend the three," Arizona State coach Natasha Adair said. "I thought we executed the game plan from start to finish beautifully."

Skinner and Nevaeh Parkinson, who finished with 15 points and six rebounds, each scored 7 as the Sun Devils used an 11-2 run bridging the first and second quarters to push the visitors' lead to 25-14 before Gibb scored her first 3-pointer with 6:22 left in the half.

Less than a minute later, she hit another. Whiting added another with 5:13 to go, a 9-0 run in 1:10 that pulled the Cougars within 25-23 midway through the second quarter.

Gibb shot 3-of-4 from 3-point range for 9 points, then dished to an open Whiting on the fast break to lift the Cougars to their first lead of the game, 31-29 with 1:08 on the clock โ€” and Brinley Cannon punctuated the half with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to stretch BYU's lead to 34-31 at the break.

ASU punched back in the third quarter, when Brown scored 9 points and the Sun Devils limited the Cougars to 6-of-15 shooting in outscoring the hosts 22-18 for a 53-52 edge.

That was as close as BYU would get until Davenport found Kemery Congdon for a jumper from the paint with 4:59 remaining to tie the game at 62-all en route to the Cougars' 5-point lead with two minutes to go.

"That's when players make big plays," Adair said. "They make plays, they step up. The biggest thing for us was the management. But this group is fearless."
