SALT LAKE CITY — Gov. Spencer Cox on Wednesday issued an order calling for the U.S. and Utah flags at state offices and other state facilities to be flown at full staff on Monday to mark President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration.
Cox on Dec. 29 ordered flags at Utah facilities to be flown at half-staff to honor former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who died earlier that day, through Jan. 28. Following Trump's inauguration at the U.S. Capitol, starting at sunset Monday, flags at Utah facilities are to return to half staff, per Cox's new order, and remain in the lowered position until sunset on Jan. 28, as originally planned.
"Gov. Cox extends an invitation to all private citizens, businesses and organizations across the state to join in this tribute," the governor's office said in a statement. Trump will be starting his second term as president.
U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson on Tuesday similarly ordered flags at the U.S. Capitol to be flown at full height for Trump's inauguration, according to the Associated Press. The governors of North Dakota, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee and Texas also issued orders similar to Cox's calling for flags, lowered to honor Carter, to be temporarily raised to mark Trump's inauguration.
