WILLARD, Box Elder County — A 27-year-old man was found dead after he went missing following a BASE jump near Willard Peak on Friday, according to the Box Elder County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies said Jonathan Bizilia, 27, of Alabama, was reported missing by a friend around 2 p.m. Friday after Bizilia failed to provide an update after a planned BASE jump in a wingsuit.
BASE jumping is a recreational sport of jumping from fixed objects using a parachute. BASE is an acronym for building, antenna, span and earth.
Bizilia was found dead at about 4 p.m. by a Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter, about one mile northwest of Willard Peak "in extremely rugged terrain," after an apparent crash, the sheriff's office said.
Bizilia was an experienced BASE jumper who regularly shared videos of his jumps with nearly 75,000 followers on Instagram.
"We offer our deepest condolences to his family and friends during this challenging time," deputies said.
