SALT LAKE CITY — A 20-year-old man has been arrested in a Salt Lake shooting that left a man in critical condition.

And police say it's not the first time they've arrested Abdiaziz Sheikhnoor Ibrahim in a shooting investigation.

Ibrahim was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on Thursday for investigation of firing a gun causing serious injury, aggravated assault resulting in serious injury and being a restricted person in possession of a gun.

About 2:35 a.m. Sunday, Salt Lake police responded to a report of a shooting near 1500 North and 1900 West. A 27-year-old man was taken by medical helicopter to a hospital in critical condition, according to a police booking affidavit.

"(Ibrahim) shot a defenseless person with no apparent provocation. (Ibrahim) is a documented gang member with a lengthy criminal history, including multiple violent and weapon offenses," the affidavit states. "(Ibrahim) has a history of intimidating witnesses and victims."

No other information about the victim or the circumstances surrounding the shooting was immediately available, except that police believe the shooting was gang-related.

In October, Ibrahim was charged in connection with another shooting at Salt Lake City's Westpointe Park, 1155 N. Colonel Road. In January, he pleaded guilty in that case to aggravated assault resulting in serious injury, which was reduced to a third-degree felony, according to court documents. Ibrahim was given a suspended prison sentence and placed on probation. As part of the conditions of his probation, the court warned, "Do not come before this court or any other court for anything other than a minor traffic violation."
