MOAB — A search and rescue operation is underway near Moab for an overdue party of two people who were riding an all-terrain vehicle.

Grand County Sheriff's Office received report of an abandoned vehicle on Monday morning and discovered the vehicle was associated with an overdue party, the sheriff's office said in a statement Tuesday.

This prompted a search in the Steel Bender off-road trail area, where officials located an ATV that also belonged to the reported overdue party.

The sheriff's office said there are ground teams, helicopters, dogs and "other specialized equipment" searching for the man and woman. The public is encouraged to avoid the area while the search is underway.

Family members confirmed the identities of the two missing people as Ray and Maranda Ankofski.

A post Monday night on the public Facebook group, Moab Off Road, said the couple has been missing since Friday afternoon. The post said the couple's truck was located at the Steel Bender trail and their ATV was found in a ravine.
