ROCKVILLE, Washington County — About 10 homes were evacuated Friday as emergency crews battle a wildfire in Washington County near the southern entrance to Zion National Park.
Hurricane Valley Fire said crews are working on an "active brush fire" near Rockville. Ground and air crews from several agencies are helping to extinguish the blaze.
Utah Fire Info, the state's wildfire information group, says the fire is estimated to be about 30 acres in steep, rocky terrain.
There were about 10 homes that were threatened by the fire and evacuated, according to Mike Melton with Utah Division of Forestry, Fire, and State Lands. Several properties also lost power.
"Forward progression of the flames has been stopped by firefighters and fire resources," Utah Fire Info said at 6 p.m. Firefighters will continue to work on the fire, but evacuations have been lifted.
Police and fire crews are urging the public to avoid the area. Closures were in place on state Route 9 between Rockville and Springdale, where the fire is near the roadway.
By late Friday, Melton said the conditions were looking better and the road was partially reopened to one lane.
Officials believe it was human-caused and started on private property within Rockville city limits. They did not say the exact cause.
