PROVO — For its second straight year, BYU football used the transfer portal to add a two-time transfer quarterback.

This one has Big 12 experience, too.

The Cougars added to the quarterback room Thursday when former Baylor and South Florida signal caller Gerry Bohanon Jr. announced his commitment to the program for his sixth season.

The 6-foot-3, 226-pound native of Earle, Arkansas, spent four years with the Bears, completing 62.9% of his passes for 2,200 yards and 18 touchdowns with seven interceptions in 2021 en route to the Big 12 championship game (which, admittedly, Bohanon missed due to a hamstring injury).

Bohanon then transferred to South Florida, where he threw for 1,070 yards and six touchdowns with six interceptions in seven games with the Bulls. He also sat out the 2023 season with a shoulder injury before announcing his entry into the portal Nov. 28, 2023, prior to Thursday's destination announcement.

At both stops, Bohanon was considered a dual-threat quarterback, running for 323 yards and a league-high nine touchdowns in his final year at Baylor and 386 yards and three scores in his lone playing season in Tampa, Florida.

But he also hasn't played in a year, and joins a quarterback room that was presumably led by former No. 1 junior college quarterback Jake Retzlaff, who played in four games while redshirting during the Cougars' 5-7 inaugural season in the Big 12.

Beyond Retzlaff, BYU also brought back redshirt freshman Ryder Burton, former Boise State transfer Cade Fennegan, one-time Utah walk-on Nick Billoups and former Corner Canyon standout Cole Hagen. Three-star Texas quarterback Noah Lugo, a former UTSA commit, also signed with the Cougars as part of the recruiting class of 2024.

He also joins an experienced offense with a number of veteran receivers, including Kody Epps, Chase Roberts, Keelan Marion, Parker Kingston and Keanu Hill, who will move to tight end.
