SPRINGVILLE — A 23-year-old man was shot and killed in Springville over the weekend.
Police say Michael Mayer had just gotten out of his car when he was shot multiple times around 3 a.m. Saturday at an apartment complex at 216 S. 100 West.
Springville police on Monday shared a message from Mayer's mother, who described "Mikey" as "someone who lived to serve others, and would do nearly anything for someone in need. He loved gaming with his brother, and fishing."
Friends and family members also mourned Mayer's death on social media.
"How is this real? Mikey was the light in any room he was in and his smile would without a doubt bring joy. We live in such a cruel world with no explanation. Heaven gained an angel we on earth were not ready to let go of. We love you so Michael Mayer," one post states.
After the shooting, three people were detained for questioning following a lengthy standoff involving officers from the Provo, Mapleton and Payson police departments, as well as the Utah County Sheriff's Office and the Utah County Metro SWAT team.
Amanda Bird, 43, was arrested and booked into the Utah County Jail for investigation of obstruction of justice and failing to stop at the command of police.
Officers responding to the shooting spotted Bird walking in the area and believed she had been trying to hide from them, a police booking affidavit states.
"Due to the nature of the incident, officers held Bird at gunpoint and commanded her to stop. Officers indicated that Bird then looked around as if thinking of what to do and then ran down the stairwell and entered (an apartment)," according to the affidavit.
Bird then called emergency dispatchers several times, asking why police were at her residence "and that she would only talk with officers from the window. Bird spoke with officers. She was commanded to exit the residence but would not comply with lawful orders. While Bird was speaking to dispatch, they could hear what sounded like one male crying and someone was consoling him," the affidavit states.
Bird would also "open the door of the residence, scream obscenities at the police, then slam the door shut," according to the arrest report.
She and another man in the apartment were taken into custody and questioned. Bird initially told detectives the other man shot Mayer because Mayer owed the man money, but later said he did not shoot him and that "she did not know anything about what happened."
As of Monday, Bird is the only person who has been arrested. Police say the homicide investigation is continuing and additional interviews need to be conducted.
