NEWTON, Cache County — A woman was killed Thursday afternoon in a single-vehicle crash outside of Newton, in Cache County.
Utah Highway Patrol said a vehicle was heading east on state Route 218 between Newton and Amalga just after 2:30 p.m. when the car went off the road and struck a power pole. The impact caused the car to flip in the air and land upside down, partially submerged in an irrigation canal.
The Department of Public Safety said the car was submerged in about 3 feet of water for approximately 30 minutes before crews were able to lift it up enough to access the driver.
The 54-year-old woman driving was the only occupant of the car and she died on scene. Her name has not yet been released.
The investigation is ongoing, but police say it is unknown why the car went off the road. The road is closed and traffic is being diverted while electric crews replace the power pole and damaged power lines.
