NEPHI — One person died, and five others were injured in a crash involving several vehicles on I-15 near Nephi on Sunday.

The crash happened just before 12:30 p.m. in the southbound lanes of I-15 at mile marker 227, which is about a mile north of Nephi.

The area of the fatal crash is an active construction zone, and a previous crash had caused traffic to back up, according to a statement from the Utah Highway Patrol. When troopers arrived at the scene, they found two vehicles involved in what the department described as a "rear-end style collision."

There were four occupants in the vehicle that was rear-ended, the UHP statement says, and all four occupants were injured. One of the four suffered fatal injuries, the department said.

The man who died was identified by family members as Josh Dupass. His two sons were injured in the crash — one is in critical condition and will require surgery; the other was expected to be released from the hospital Monday. Dupass's wife Jessica was released from the hospital Sunday after being treated for a broken rib and spinal sprain, according to her sister Star Esancy.

There were two occupants in the second vehicle, and troopers say both of them received minor injuries.

Investigation of the crash required a nearly four-hour closure of all southbound lanes of I-15 in the area, and traffic was diverted onto state Route 28. All lanes of the freeway reopened at 4 p.m. Sunday.
