CENTERVILLE — One person is dead following a plane crash in Centerville.

A single engine plane crashed in a field at 1500 North just west of the Legacy Parkway on Tuesday about 11:25 a.m., according to Centerville police.

"First responders located the lone occupant still inside the aircraft and pronounced him deceased," police said. The pilot was identified as Donald Nathan Higgs, 43, of Plain City, Weber County.

Centerville police said that before the plane crashed, the pilot reported over his radio that something was wrong with the plane and that he couldn't make it to the nearby Skypark Airport.

Higgs was the only person inside the plane at the time.

"There's some family out there right now that is getting some horrible news, and our condolences go out to everyone who knwos the pilot and are affiliated with him. I know the pilot community here in the Davis County area is a tight-knit community, so there are going to be many people mourning a loss today," said Centerville Police Lt. Allen Ackerson.

In addition to Centerville police and fire crews, representatives from the National Transportation Safety Board, Federal Aviation Administration, and the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner are responding to the scene.
